Public School Strengths & Shortcomings

  1. In essence, the greatest strength and the worst weakness of public schools boils down to one thing – a positive academic experience for most students is created mainly by the relationships they form with their teachers. Incredible teachers create incredible students, and public schools are places where incredible teachers can be created over time. The large-scale size of many public schools provides room for many wonderful teachers, who can both positively affect students and be an excellent role model for new teachers. New teachers who have this wide variety of teachers to observe and learn from have a better opportunity to become great teachers themselves. Although class sizes are often larger than they should be, teachers have many opportunities to work with students in their public school’s after school and extracurricular programs. Since these programs are often extensive, students also have the ability to develop a wide range of interests because they have access to diverse opportunities in their school. Diversity in the racial makeup of public schools is also a wonderful benefit because it helps to create worldliness of the individual. Students who are exposed to a wide diversity of classmates are given the opportunity to understand both the similarities and differences between themselves and people of different backgrounds. As a product of public school, I have found that it teaches students more than just academics; they are places where students develop their social, athletic, and vocational abilities.

  2. I believe that Public Schools do have many positive offerings for their students, but they lack because of the large class size. Public Schools tend to be overpopulated because of the fact that they are free. Public Schools have many resources and programs, but they do not always meet their potential because it is more difficult with an oversized class. I went to Public School all of my life, and loved it. I think that they do the best they can to make it a great experience. You meet some amazing teachers, who know what they are doing because they are certified, and many friends from all different cultures.
When it comes to the great programs Public Schools offer, it is all based on the budget. I think band, music, art, and afterschool are all extremely important for the students. I think they should be given a larger budget for this because the arts alone benefit the students in many ways. They allow the students to be away from test prep and written work for a period or two a week. I think this is one of the greatest things Public Schools have to offer and they should really try and keep it around for the sake of the students.

  3. I have gone to public school my entire life, and even though there were some "shortcomings" the experiences I had there made me want to become a teacher myself. Yes, there are some teachers who when they have tenure start to care less about doing a good job teacher, but they don't outweigh the teachers who put their hearts and souls into their students and were made to teach children. In my junior and senior year of high school, our budget failed in the vote, and instead of just sulking and sitting around, the student body fought to prove that we deserved to have our budget pass, and it did. When it comes to school, it doesn't matter if it's public, private or charter, if both the faculty and the students have the heart, the learning environment will thrive.

  4. The creation of the public school system was a brilliant idea. By installing this system, overtime it made education a very important part of growing up in this country. Education determines so many things in one's life. The better educated someone is, the individual will be able to make better decisions and choices in life.

Growing up in Flushing, NY, I attended a public elementary school. Unfortunately I did not have the best experience in that school. My parents explained to me a few years ago that I used to come home from school bored daily, which was why they decided it would be best to put me through private schools.

Private schools were great because of the smaller communities and individualized attention, but it lacked one thing that I think is great about public schools - an array of vocational classes. Unfortunately this varies by district and neighborhood. As Stefany stated above, it doesn't matter what kind of school is better, it comes down to the passion and heart of the people that will make the difference. Money is important, but it is not the most important factor in education.
