The Lottery

  1. I have never seen "The Lottery", but after seeing this trailer I am very interested to see and learn what information this film will provide. We have a failing system that is negatively affecting our children. Parents in some neighborhoods go to many lengths to get their children into some charter schools but there isn't room for everyone. So how do we fix this problem?

  2. The Lottery is a life-changing movie! This movie really makes you feel what parents and children go through. Can you imagine being a mother or a father, having a child and having a rough background? Could you imagine one of the best schools telling you that you have been rejected? Could you imagine not giving your child the best education they deserve? Watch this movie and you will know what people go through on a daily basis.

  3. I have seen both Waiting For Superman and The Lottery. It gives you a glimpse of the anxiety, fear, relief, and other emotions that both parents and children feel when they are in the lottery for a chance to attend a charter school.

We see that The Lottery is not just a movie, it is an every day situation. There are clips on YouTube of news segments that discuss the lottery in their own cities. It hits even closer to home when you see it on your 5 o'clock news.

  4. "The problem is a system that protects academic failure."

As I watched this trailer, I couldn't help but think of the children and the families who are personally impacted by the lottery results, especially those who are rejected. Like a death sentence, they will most likely be returning to their failing schools while the students whose names were called will reap the tremendous benefits that come along with attending a charter school. I see charter schools as valuable assets to our education system, but at the same time question the injustices that exist in America's schools. A meaningful education should not be restricted to those students who are lucky enough to be randomly selected in a lottery. Shouldn't all students be entitled to an opportunity to create a successful future for themselves? Charter schools seem like a short-term and limited solution to the education crisis we face here in America. What we really need is widespread, systematic change in our public schools so that charter schools are an alternative option, rather than the only option.

  5. Seeing the trailer for The Lottery brings to life the emotions parents and children go through when they are in a lottery to attend a charter school. One part of the trailer that really stood out to me was seeing how a child's future can be destroyed in a single day. I couldn't even imagine the anxiety the parents are going through during that time. And when you think about it, is it really fair that a child's destiny and education is based on a lottery system? It's all about the luck of the draw, is that really how a child's education should chosen?

It is clear that there are problems within the American education system but every child deserves the right to receive the best education possible. Instead of having this competition between students getting into charter schools rather than public schools I believe we need to continue to work to make changes in the public school system to make it more successful and beneficial to children. I think the public school system could learn a great deal from the progress and success that they see in charter schools and could try and use some of those ideas to help better their education system.

  6. When I watch this small excerpt from the movie one thing comes to my mind: Why is this happening? In a previous article by Diane Ravitch this lottery process is mentioned. Yes, the lottery itself is intense, rewarding or disappointing, full of anxiety and hope, but is it necessary? When students apply to colleges they do not all sit in a room and hope their name gets pulled from a hat. There is a simple letter sent home stating their acceptance or denial. I disapprove of the lost hope the charter schools give to these students in need of a better educational experience.
Seeing the disappointing and hopeless children push me to become the best educator I can be. I want my future students to come to school knowing they are getting the best they can get. It surprises me that other people see videos like this and think to shut down failing schools and open up new ones, but to a small select group of students. Wouldn't it be amazing if all the students wishing to get into charter schools could have the same feeling about public schools?

  7. This movie looks very interesting. I have never heard of the movie, or this process of the lottery. I think that this process is very unfair and tormenting for the children amd their parents. These students are being chosen at random, without any consideraton of grades, academic achievement in the past or anything. This process seems ridiculous. When my cousin filled out an application for her son to go to Kiundergarten at a Public School, she recieved a letter as to whether or not he was accepted. I believe that these students are also chosen at random, but to have the parents and their children anxiously waiting for a name to be picked like the lottery, is just not necessary. It makes the children feel unwanted. I believe that if Charter Schools are so wonderful, they should work on opening more. I don't see anything wrong with Puiblic School, but maybe it is because I was never exposed to a Charter School. I think every child has potential, and they can excell at any school as long as they work hard for it.

  8. This trailer really moved me. I never saw the movie, but I do know about the lottery children must enter in order to get a chance to attend a charter school. I do know if a lottery is the best way to choose who is allowed to attend a chart school or not. In addition to entering the lottery, the students must be selected to go to the charter school. The charter schools do not accept just anyone. It is really sad that this is what it comes down to. A child's future and good education depends on a lottery and being selected. It sickens me.
